TALES OF SUSPENSE #31 featuring “The Monster In the Iron Mask” by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers, is sometimes cited as a prototype of Doctor Doom, whose face-mask is similar.
What this theory fails to take into account is that TALES OF SUSPENSE #31 went on sale at the same time as FANTASTIC FOUR #5, the first appearance of Doctor Doom. Kirby must have really been into this mask-design that month.
